Diary

28-10-10 to 5-11-10: A rather “I am stuck” week but at last I see light in the end of the tunnel

28-10-10: New project focused on photography.  I like it but I feel  overwhelmed with  the choice of things I could do and I find it difficult to choose which competition brief  to work on.
29-10 -10: Still undecided but I have to start from somewhere. Decide to research what makes a good photograph to focus on photography principles and techniques.
Have a look at the fashion photography blog and think what camera to use for the project.
30-10-10: At least I found a proper camera that I would like to work with! I like the idea to work with an analogue camera.
Two very good books from the library
1.       Thames@Hudson (2008). The Fashion Photography Course
2.       Friedlander, L. (1989). Like a One-Eyed Cat: Photographs by Lee Friedlander 1956-1987
Read, read , read...
31-10-10:  I open my blog but don’t feel like creating a single post. Ideas, photographs, technical  details  are all mixed up in my brain. I am stuck!!!!
1-11-10: Very helpful meeting with the photographer. He likes that I will use an analogue camera. Some good tips on using my camera.
Thinking to choose the “Exposed” brief but still not sure what to do about it. Why am I so indecisive?
2-11-10:  Group Tutorial with Eve. Very constructive.  At last I chose the “Exposed” brief but I am so behind.
3-11-10: Think, think , think... What “exposed” means, how is manifested in photography, in  everyday life,  in my life.  What “exposed” means for me?
Research the internet like crazy,  take notes, notes, notes... Still not a single post!
5-11-10:  Heaven! At last my mental blog has vanished! Quite a few ideas form in my mind.  I create my  first two posts but do I have enough time?

6-11-10 to 7-11-10: A "I feel possitive about the project" weekend

6-11-10: Two or three ideas for photos that I could take but I am unsure whether I have to use the same model in all the photos or I can use different models connected by the same idea.  E-mail to Eve for clarification.
7-11-10: Very good day today. I finished my research but I need to finalise my idea for the photos and to concentrate on the photography.

8-11-10 to 9-11-10: Finalising my idea....

8-11-10: On the way back to Preston by train I started testing some ideas I had about surveillance  by filming a girl putting on her make-up whithout her being aware about it. I thought that I could upload this video clip on my blog but I was not sure if I was allowed to do it without asking the girl's permission. Better to ask Eve first on Tuesday's tutorial.

9-11-10: Very good group tutorial! I finalised my idea with Eve's help and  I feel more confident now  for what I will do,  creative and rather excited. Good news about the video clip of the girl on the train. Eve said that I could upload it.

10-11-10 to 13-11-10: The photo shoot ...

10-11-10: Inspired from the film of the girl on the train, I decided to take photos of a girl, that cameras catch glimpses of, during an ordinary day. I thought that in order to capture the essence of my idea, that is the sense of somebody that is being watched without being aware of it, I had to create a “reality” atmosphere and to make my model to act naturally. My way to achieve this was to ask my model to come on a shopping trip with me on a day she was free.  I let her choose the clothes that she would wear by herself and put on her make-up the way she usually does.
11-11-10: Day of the photo shoot. Feel absolutely exhausted. Very hard to capture the mood and to take decent photos on a crowded train that moves quickly. Light was not good as well. Still hopeful... Can’t wait to develop the film!
12-11-10: I developed the film. A  little disappointed for some of the photos. A shame that the exposure was wrong, they would have been great. I realised how harder it is to work with an analogue camera. Good experience though.
13-11-10: Final selection of the photos that they will represent my idea.  I didn’t enjoy cutting the mount board and sticking the photographs on it. I should have had better tools and more practice with it. Anyway, good learning journey and despite the disappointments along the way I feel that I acquired some new skills and that I also like the end result.
